A place I have never been is a place I must see, I said to myself and hit the road to Bratislava during my last Vienna trip. Bratislava is one hour away from Vienna if you take the bus just as I did, or you can take the boat, especially if the weather is nice. There was free Wi-Fi in the bus but the journey ended before I decided which playlist to listen on Spotify.
I am a no-plan & no-checklist kind of traveler but considering the few hours I had for the city, I decided to use them efficiently and went to tourist information office to get a map and some tips. If you knew me well, you would be laughing out loud while imagining me getting a map as I always manage to get lost whenever I use a map. This meme sums up my story pretty well. And this is the response I get everytime I share my getting lost stories.
There are lots and lots of nice cafes and pubs in Bratislava. If I had more time, I would definitely have caffeine overdose. Among all of the good nominees, the winner of my heart was Narnia Pub just because its name. Congratulations, Narnia. Is a hard job, winning my heart.
The best thing about small cities is that you can find almost everything just by walking around. My motto was “walkwalkwalkwalkwalkwalkwalkpicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturepicturevpicturechurchurchurhpicture cathedraloperapicturewalkwalkwalkcoffeecoffeesnackssouvenirswalkwalkpicturepicturepicturelunchbeerpicturewalkwalkwalk” which worked pretty fine at the end.
I visited St. Martin’s Cathedral where Austro-Hungarian monarchs were crowned (quoting my city map), the national theater, Primate’s Palace, Old Town Hall, Franciscan church, and some other churches and discovered streets of the Old Town.
My next stop was the castle as you can generally get a nice view of the cities there. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to walk up to Bratislava castle and you can have a panoramic view of the city however I was not that impressed with this one. But you can also check the pictures and decide it for yourself.
After taking 500 pictures of UFO bridge, I headed back to the Old Town for more discoveries.
On my way to St. Michael’s tower, I reached the Kilometre Zero point. It was such a lovely and pleasent feeling to see that there was 1231 km between me and İstanbul.
Then I went up to St. Michael’s tower to get a closer glimpse of the city from the top, which I liked more than the castle view. I was both surprised and happy when they gave me the student discount for my Turkish student ID card, which has not happened in the other EU countries. You can use the same ticket to visit Pharmacy Museum. It is not a must-visit place but why not check it out if you have the ticket already.
I had my lunch at a restaurant in the center of the Old Town with a really nice view which was of course a tourist trap so I see no reason to recommend it. But let me know if you would like to have the opportunity of taking pictures while having your overpriced beer & goulash.
Later on that evening, I had a plan with my Irish pub buddies in Vienna so I called it a day around 6 pm and made a huge mistake checking out wrong bus schedule. I rushed myself to bus stop thinking I was late. Drinking too much beer was also not a good idea before the bus ride but I thought there would be a nice toilet at the bus stop where I could take care of this small problem. I have never been so wrong. Have you watched Trainspotting? If yes, do you remember the scene with the worst toilet in Scotland? Well, I think I managed to find Bratislava branch. And this one was only big enough to fit toilet seat so after having several dilemmas and a life-long trauma, I just ran away screaming. The good thing is, I only paid 50 cent for this horror story. It could have been a lot more expensive…
If you are around one of the neighboring cities/countries, I definitely recommend Bratislava for a day trip. Narrow streets, delicious wine/beer/coffee, many kinds of local food, cheap souvenirs (for hoarders like me) and so much history and culture. Bratislava will not let you down on any of these!
